The beauty of imperfection

Everything is impermanent, imperfect and incomplete. Long ago, Japanese monks introduced this beautiful term: Wasi-sabi: the beauty of imperfection. Key concepts in this Japanese concept are: earthy, simple, unpretentious, intimate, irregular and the appearance of a natural process. All this is reflected in the shadow pictures of Couzijn van Leeuwen. The shadow of the photographer is incomplete: the photographer is never to be seen. The shadow of the photographer proves fleeting: a cloud, the sun and the gradation and color of the shadow changes or disappears, sometimes gradually, sometimes immediately with a direct impact on the structure of the background. The series shadow pictures is the result of carefully chosen spot compositions. At the same time is the coincidence in combination with the light, the attitude of the creator and the irregular ground structure,  unpredictable and is a sometimes a magical experience.
